Return of Soldier’s Remains Marks Major Milestone in Gaza Truce

In a powerful moment of closure for Israel, the body of Hadar Goldin — an Israeli military officer killed in Gaza in 2014 — was officially handed over on Sunday. His remains were transferred by Hamas to Israeli authorities through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Goldin was 23 years old when he died in August 2014 during the war that year between Israel and Hamas. His body remained in Gaza until now, returned under a broader truce deal that took effect on October 10 2025, following the recent 2023-24 Israel-Hamas war.

According to Israel’s Prime Minister’s office, forensic teams have confirmed the remains are those of Goldin. His return has been described as “a relief” for his family after more than 11 years of uncertainty.

Truce exchange framework

This hand-over is part of a larger exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas:

Hamas has released 20 living hostages to Israel since the truce began. Israel has freed nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and wartime detainees. Hamas has returned 24 sets of remains of deceased hostages; Goldin’s return brings their total to 24. Meanwhile, Israel has transferred the remains of around 300 Palestinians — though not all have been identified. Four bodies of hostages remain in Gaza: three Israelis and one Thai, according to Israeli and international sources.
