Nigerian comedian and content creator Carter Efe has found himself at the centre of an online controversy after Babcock University publicly distanced itself from a certificate circulating online that was linked to him.
The document, which went viral on social media, allegedly suggested that Carter Efe, whose real name is Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, received a “First Class Upper” certificate in Biochemistry from the university.
However, Babcock University has denied issuing the certificate, describing it as fake and unauthorised.
In a statement released by the institution, the university explained that the document did not follow its official academic processes and clarified that it does not award honorary certificates based on undergraduate academic classifications.
The university also pointed out that the phrase “First Class Upper” is not part of its academic grading terminology, stating that the recognised classification is “First Class Honours.”
The controversy began after the certificate surfaced online, sparking conversations among fans and critics, with many questioning the authenticity of the claim.
Carter Efe, who rose to fame through comedy skits and later became known for his music and viral moments online, has not been widely reported to have responded to the university’s statement at the time of publication.
Babcock University further warned members of the public against circulating false documents bearing its name and revealed that it may pursue legal action against individuals involved in producing or spreading fraudulent materials.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing conversations around online fame, celebrity claims, and the pressure surrounding public recognition.
As social media continues to amplify personal achievements and controversies, the Carter Efe certificate saga has become another reminder that viral moments often come with public scrutiny.
