For many years, Nigerians have heard the popular saying, “nobody is above the law.” But it appears the message was not only meant for humans.
In Oyo State, six cows have found themselves on the wrong side of the law after being arrested for allegedly violating the state’s open grazing regulations.
The unusual incident happened in Ibadan when officials of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) carried out a monitoring exercise around Old Ife Road, Alakia, and Elebu Idi Ahun in Ido Local Government Area.
According to the authorities, the cows were spotted moving freely and grazing in areas where they were not permitted to. While the animals were simply looking for their next meal, their search for fresh grass landed them in government custody.
A separate operation also took place along the busy Mokola highway, where three cows were reportedly seen roaming and creating concerns for motorists and residents. One of the cows was successfully captured while the others made a quick escape.
The arrest has sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians joking that the cows may now need legal representation.
Some joked that the animals were only guilty of “following their appetite,” while others said the incident was a reminder that laws apply to everyone — whether they walk on two legs or four.
But beyond the humour, the authorities said the enforcement is part of efforts to curb open grazing, protect communities, and prevent clashes that can arise from uncontrolled livestock movement.
For the six cows involved, however, the lesson is clear: in Oyo State, even a peaceful search for grass can come with consequences.
The days of “I see grass, I go there” may officially be over.
