For years, celebrities have had to deal with one uncomfortable reality. Once a false story finds its way onto the internet, it can follow them for years.
Some ignore it. Some release statements. Others simply move on.

But Nollywood actress Adunni Ade chose a different path.
The actress has secured a ₦30 million judgment against Google LLC after a Nigerian court ruled in her favour over false online publications that linked her romantically with former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye.

According to court reports, the stories falsely portrayed Adunni as being in a romantic relationship with the politician, a claim she has consistently denied.
Instead of allowing the rumours to continue spreading, she took the matter to court.
The court ruled that the continued publication of the stories, alongside her photographs and personal information, violated her right to privacy under the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
As part of the judgment, Google was ordered to pay ₦30 million in damages and remove the offending content from Google Search and YouTube.
Interestingly, many social media users claimed that Adunni also won a case against Meta.
However, court reports indicate that although Meta Platforms was initially listed as a defendant, it was later struck out of the suit after a preliminary objection. The ₦30 million award was made against Google.
The ruling has since generated widespread reactions online.
Many Nigerians have described it as a major victory, not just for celebrities but for anyone who has suffered reputational damage because of false information online.
Others believe the judgment sends a strong message that digital platforms also have responsibilities when harmful content remains accessible to the public.
For Adunni Ade, the case appears to have been about more than financial compensation.
It was about protecting her reputation and proving that false narratives do not have to become permanent simply because they gained attention online.
Whether the judgment will influence how global tech companies respond to similar complaints in Nigeria remains to be seen.
One thing is certain. Adunni Ade did not just clear her name. She made history while doing it.
